Damien Simonis, born and bred in Sydney, Australia, took a one-way flight to Cairo in 1989 and has never looked back. He has lived and worked in Egypt, London, Italy, Spain and Switzerland. Having started as a newspaper reporter and sub-editor, he wound up writing travel guidebooks for Lonely Planet, National Geographic and other publishers. Over 18 years, that work took him from Syria and the Sudan to Berlin and Venice, and en route he discovered a passion for photography that accompanies him on his travels to this day.
